  • Youth Congress leader Srinivas BV was allegedly manhandled by Delhi cops, during a protest against the ED questioning of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi
  • Delhi Police personnel on July 26 were seen pulling the hair of the National President of Indian Youth Congress, Srinivas BV, and manhandling him.
  • The video of the incident went viral on social media

A video has gone viral, where the chief of the youth wing of Congress — the main opposition party in India can be seen being manhandled and his hair pulled by police personnel in Delhi.

The visuals of the alleged manhandling of Mr. BV Srinivas by the Delhi Police have also drawn strong reactions from prominent figures.

The incident occurred while he was detained during the party’s protest against the ED questioning of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi in the national capital.

In the video which is going viral on social media, police personnel could be seen grabbing the Congress leader’s hair as a dozen policemen attempted to push him inside their vehicle.

In the same video, Srinivas too could be seen struggling to get out of the grip of policemen and talk to the media persons.

Is this how leaders from opposition parties are treated in BJP ruled state?

Facing criticism, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi district) Amrutha Guguloth reportedly said that they are attempting to identify the police personnel who allegedly manhandled Srinivas. “Disciplinary action would be initiated against the staff after identifying,” the DCP assured.

Earlier, the Delhi Police detained hundreds of opposition party workers and parliamentarians, including Rahul Gandhi from two different locations — near Parliament and outside Congress party headquarters at 24, Akbar Road. Srinivas was also detained from outside the AICC office.

Srinivas was cited as saying by PTI that he was beaten up by three to four policemen before being detained. “When we were protesting, some three to four police personnel hit me.

They also pulled my hair and forcefully dragged me inside a car. The police first took us to Sarojini Nagar and later to the Vasant Kunj police station. We are yet to be released,” he said Tuesday evening.

The central agency on Tuesday recorded Gandhi’s statement on the second day of her questioning in the money laundering case linked to the National Herald newspaper.

Gandhi, who was questioned for 2.5 hours before lunch and rejoined after a break, had reached the ED office in central Delhi around 11 am with her Z+ armed security cover, and accompanied by her children Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

In an official statement, Srinivas said, “The dictatorial government will not be able to crush our spirits by taking us into police custody. We will end the suppression of the dictatorial rule of the BJP with Satyagraha. Fighting against the dictatorial rule Gandhi, Nehru and Patel also went to jail. We are also not afraid of the prison of this dictatorial government.”

Congress workers and MPs staged a protest march from Parliament to Vijay Chowk in support of Congress Interim President Sonia Gandhi.
