26 Members of a Single Family Test Positive for Coronavirus in Delhi’s Jahangirpuri

The event shows how the virus can infect a large number of people in a relatively larger Indian joint family where multiple generations live together. At least 26 members of an extended family living in Jahangirpuri in Delhi have tested positive for coronavirus.

The members of the extended family stay in different houses in Jahangirpuri’s area. The locality has already been declared a coronavirus hotspot by the Delhi government and sealed.

“A total of 2274 samples were tested yesterday in Delhi out of which 67 cases tested positive. In the last 2-3 days, the number of cases has gone down. I hope that the cases will go down even more in the coming days”, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal said in a statement.

He further added that the Delhi govt has so far identified 71 containment zones; some people, not the following order, stepping out of homes in these areas

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has confirmed that the 26 family members of one single-family tested positive. Health officials have since started an intensive check-up and track drive in the area even as the source of the infection is yet not established.

Those living in the family’s neighborhood were also being tested for coronavirus. Kejriwal said that people in the area kept on roaming the streets and bylanes despite authorities sealing the area.

He said that some even visited their relatives living nearby. Kejriwal appealed to the people to strictly observe the lockdown guidelines and venture out of the house only if necessary. He said that the area has since been sanitized.

Delhi government’s handling of coronavirus outbreak

Delhi became the first state in India to announce a compensation of Rs 1 crore to the family of those “coronawarriors” who lose their lives while attending to the patients of COVID-19.

“If any doctor, nurse, a sanitation worker at the hospital, lab technician contracts the infection and dies due to it, while attending to the patients of COVID-19, then Delhi govt will give a compensation of Rs 1 Crore to their family.

There are other people too who are looking after Corona patients-Police, Civil Defence volunteers, teachers. If anyone contracts Coronavirus and dies due to it, while looking after Corona patients, then it will be extended to all such people. Their families will be given Rs 1 crore,” the chief minister said.

Furthermore, three more containment zones were identified today by the Delhi government. The areas that were identified as hot zones and sealed included Rangpuri Pahari and Inder Puri. Within the latest addition, the total number of red zones in the national capital has gone up to 71.
